The surveys were carried out with the main purpose of verifying the existing framework of environmental liabilities, mainly attributable to the presence of Asbestos-Containing Materials (ACM) and insulation affected by Synthetic Vitreous Fibers (SVF) either installed or in storage at three disused production sites.

The potential materials containing ACM/SVF include insulation materials, building construction materials (both structural and non-structural, such as roofing, walls, dividers, false ceilings, vinyl flooring and associated adhesives, etc.), and the structural components of the plants themselves.

Highlights
1

Mapping and inventorying activities for asbestos-containing materials (ACM) and synthetic vitreous fibres (SVF) through sampling and analysis of suspected materials.

2

Support activities for programming and planning of safeguarding, restoration, and/or demolition operations.

At each site analyzed, the following activities were carried out:

 - Mapping and inventorying of ACM/SVF materials by sampling suspect materials to perform analytical tests at accredited laboratories. Different analytical methods (PLM/DS, FT-IR, SEM) were adopted depending on the characteristics of the samples.

 - Analysis of the SVF classification to determine the size of the fibers, through optical microscopy, and the percentage of alkaline-earth oxides through XRF spectrophotometry.

 - Monitoring of the state of conservation of ACM/SVF artifacts.

- Drafting of a technical report describing the environmental criticalities related to the presence of these materials on site.

 - Photographic inventory report of the installations investigated.

Finally, the documents necessary for the management of these materials were prepared.
