 The Environmental Audit is a verification process, systematic and documented, to provide objective evidence that certain activities, conditions, environmental management systems, comply with the criteria set for the audit and to communicate the results of this process.

Among the possible objectives of an Environmental Audit are: to establish compliance with a standard (ISO 14001 or EMAS), to improve compliance with mandatory laws, to pursue continuous improvement of environmental performance, to identify potential critical issues, to determine whether the Management System adopted is properly implemented and maintained. The reference standard that contains the guidelines for proper management of audit processes is ISO 19011.

Depending on the client, the objective and the field of application a distinction is made between:

  • Party audits required by the organization itself to verify the implementation status and effectiveness of its EMS and processes;
  • Second-party audits carried out by an organization on its suppliers, both preliminary (pre-contractual) and during supply (post-contractual);
  • Third-party audits carried out by an "independent third party" and aimed at verifying compliance with the requirements of specific standards that provide, for example, for the issue of a certification.
Preliminary Audits

44 preliminary audits for Engie Servizi S.p.A., Engie Italia S.p.A. and their subsidiaries and/or associates.

Identification of critical issues in different areas including FGAS, emissions, waste.

Feedback meetings for discussion and resolution of critical issues.

The activities carried out consisted of performing biased audits aimed at identifying potential site-specific criticalities. The activities were carried out according to the following phases:

  • Preparation for Audits and document review ante-Audit: the available documentation was examined in terms of its congruence with the actual situation and in relation to the requirements of the reference standards, suggesting, where necessary, any necessary changes and proposing any additional content.
  • Conduct of Audits: on-site verification of compliance with the provisions of national and international reference standards and with the checklist provided by ENGIE.
  • Revision of the Check-list if, during the two previous phases, such a necessity was highlighted.

The auditor of Pro Iter Ambiente also played a fundamental role in supporting the development of an application containing a checklist for the execution of party audits, highlighting, during the on-site checks, any criticalities in the use of the application.

A systematic verification carried out through the audit allows to minimize risks, to provide assurance to stakeholders (shareholders, employees, management, customers) and to define precise priorities of intervention for the achievement of compliance, risk reduction and process improvement.

The execution of partial audits by Pro Iter Ambiente has allowed to identify and resolve any critical issues in view of third party audits carried out with the certification body.
